Pot Size/Grade

Liriodendron tulipifera 'Fastigiatum' is the narrow, upright form of the magnificent Tulip Tree. It offers the distinctive foliage, impressive height and golden autumn colour of the species, but with a more columnar, space-conscious growth habit.

The unusual leaves have the characteristic squared-off, almost tulip-shaped profile that makes Liriodendron instantly recognisable. They're fresh green through spring and summer before developing beautiful clear yellow to golden autumn colour.

As the tree matures, it may also produce its fascinating tulip-like flowers, with greenish-yellow petals marked with orange towards the centre.

This is still a substantial tree – "Fastigiatum" means narrower, not miniature – but its upright habit makes it particularly useful for avenues, driveways, lifestyle properties and larger gardens where width is more restricted.

How to establish your Liriodendron Tulipifera Fastigiata?

Plant Liriodendron 'Fastigiatum' in full sun for the strongest growth and best overall form.

Choose its position carefully.

Although narrower than the species, this is still a large long-term tree and needs appropriate space for:

Its mature height
Root development
Canopy growth
Falling autumn leaves
Future maintenance access

Avoid planting directly underneath power lines or immediately beside buildings.

This is a tree to plan around rather than attempt to negotiate with 20 years later.

How to maintain your Liriodendron Tulipifera Fastigiata once established?

Regular watering is important during establishment.

Water deeply rather than little and often, encouraging roots to develop into the surrounding soil.

Pay particular attention during the first few Canterbury summers.

Established trees become considerably more resilient but perform best when they have access to reasonable soil moisture.

Provide supplementary water during prolonged drought, particularly during hot summer nor'west conditions.

Very dry conditions can cause:

Leaf scorch
Browning leaf margins
Premature leaf drop
Reduced growth

Apply organic mulch around the root zone after planting.

Mulch helps:

Retain soil moisture
Reduce weed competition
Moderate soil temperature
Improve soil structure
Protect developing roots

Keep mulch away from direct contact with the trunk.

As the tree grows, extending the mulched area is more useful than building an increasingly impressive volcano of mulch around the trunk.

In reasonably fertile garden soil, established Tulip Trees generally require little supplementary feeding.

For young trees, a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring can help encourage establishment.

Avoid excessive nitrogen.

Strong, steady growth with a good root system is preferable to forcing large amounts of soft growth.

Liriodendron 'Fastigiatum' naturally develops an upright form and should not require extensive pruning.

Young trees may benefit from formative pruning to establish:

A strong central leader
Well-spaced branches
A balanced framework
Appropriate clearance where required

Remove:

Dead branches
Damaged growth
Crossing branches
Competing leaders where necessary

Once the tree becomes large, significant pruning should be carried out by a suitably qualified arborist.

Maintaining the Upright Shape

Avoid unnecessarily removing or shortening the main leader.

The naturally upright growth habit is exactly why you're choosing 'Fastigiatum' in the first place.

Heavy topping can destroy the tree's natural form and encourage multiple competing shoots.

If mature height is going to be a problem, choose a smaller species rather than planting this one and beginning negotiations with it later.

Liriodendron tulipifera is very cold hardy once established and performs well in temperate New Zealand climates.

The leaves fall in autumn and the tree becomes fully dormant through winter.

Established trees generally cope very well with frost.

Fresh spring growth can occasionally be affected by severe late frosts, particularly on young trees in exposed frost pockets.

Young Tulip Trees benefit from some protection from severe wind while establishing.

Canterbury's nor'wester can increase water loss considerably and may damage soft young growth.

When planting:

Stake young trees only where required
Use flexible ties
Allow some natural trunk movement
Check ties regularly
Remove staking once the tree can support itself

Maintain consistent moisture during hot, windy periods.

Once properly established, the tree becomes considerably more robust.

One of the major ornamental features of Liriodendron is its golden autumn foliage.

As temperatures cool, the green leaves change through yellow to rich gold before falling.

For gardeners wanting strong autumn colour without choosing another red Maple, it's an excellent alternative.

And because the leaves are relatively large, the colour creates a substantial display rather than a few apologetic yellow leaves hidden somewhere near the top.
